The Phantom R1 is a seated, folding electric scooter from Phantomgogo that has been sold mainly through Costco. With a padded seat, 12-inch tires and a rear basket, it is aimed at relaxed short trips rather than speed. Here are its specs, how the R1 Pro differs, and which seated scooters to consider on Amazon.

Where to buy the R1

The R1 and R1 Pro are sold mainly through Costco, Phantomgogo’s website and deal sites. Reported prices have ranged from about $240 in a Costco member promotion to about $290 for the R1 Pro. The R1 is not currently listed on Amazon US.

Listings describe disc brakes front and rear, a rear basket and a half-height fold that makes the scooter easier to fit in a car trunk.

R1 vs R1 Pro

Several retailers sell an R1 Pro. Its listings mention a 500W motor and a 36V 8Ah battery with about a four-hour charge, and describe it as UL certified. Other R1 listings give a 450W motor and a 36V 10.4Ah battery. Because the details vary, compare the motor, battery and certification on the exact listing before you buy.

What to expect

Comfort. A seat and 12-inch tires make the R1 far more comfortable than a stand-up scooter for longer, slower rides, and easier for riders who can’t stand for long.

Speed and hills. With about 15.5 mph and a 450W motor, the R1 suits neighborhood trips, campuses and bike paths. Expect it to slow on steep hills, especially near the 265 lb limit.

Range. Around 20 miles is advertised. Most adults should plan on less, roughly 12 to 15 miles, once hills, stops and rider weight are included.

Age. The minimum age differs between sellers: Costco says 12 and up, while Phantomgogo asks for riders at least 15 years old and 5 ft tall. Follow the stricter figure for younger riders.
