The Phantom A10, from the brand Phantomgogo, is a mid-size commuter scooter best known from Costco, where it has been sold as the “Phantom A10 Smart Electric Scooter”. It promises a 400W motor, 10-inch tires, up to 28 miles of range and an app with electronic locking. Here is what those numbers mean in practice, who the A10 suits, and what to buy on Amazon if you can’t find one.

Where to buy the A10

The A10 is sold mainly through Costco and Phantomgogo’s own website, with prices reported between about $349 and $440 depending on the retailer and promotion. It is not currently listed on Amazon US; Phantomgogo’s Amazon store sells a lighter 8.5-inch model instead, which we cover below.

What it is like to own

Power and hills. A 400W rear-hub motor on a 36V battery is typical of entry-to-mid commuter scooters. It is enough for flat city riding and gentle slopes, but expect it to slow noticeably on steep hills, especially with a heavier rider.

Speed. A top speed of about 15.5 mph is a little lower than many scooters at this price, which often reach 18 to 19 mph. For bike lanes and cities with a 15 mph limit, that is no drawback, and a calmer top speed suits newer riders.

Tires. The 10-inch tires are larger than the 8.5-inch wheels common at this price. Bigger wheels roll over cracks, curb ramps and rough patches more smoothly, which makes a real difference on older city streets.

Range. The 28-mile figure is a best case. With a battery of roughly 365 Wh, an average adult riding in the normal mode with stops and some hills should plan on something closer to 15 to 20 miles. Cold weather and a heavier rider cut that further. Our guide to real-world scooter range explains why.

Brakes. A drum brake needs little maintenance and copes well in the wet, and the electronic rear brake adds gentle regenerative braking. There is no rear disc, though, so leave more stopping distance than you would on a dual-disc scooter.

Weight and theft. At about 39 lb the A10 is heavy to carry up stairs. The app lock is an immobilizer, not a theft deterrent on its own, so use a proper lock as well; see our scooter lock guide.

Advantages

  • 10-inch tires handle cracks better than 8.5-inch wheels
  • Front drum brake works in the wet and needs little maintenance
  • App lock, cruise control and three riding modes
  • A large battery for the price

Limitations

  • 15.5 mph top speed is lower than many rivals
  • About 39 lb, heavy to carry
  • No rear disc brake
  • Hard to find outside Costco and Phantomgogo’s store
  • 220 lb rider limit

Who should buy it

The A10 makes sense for short to medium commutes, roughly up to 8 miles each way, on flat or gently rolling routes, for riders under about 200 lb who prefer a calmer top speed. It is a weaker fit if your route has long, steep hills, if you weigh close to the 220 lb limit, or if you need to carry the scooter often.
